And for good measure, the committee threw in [Wisconsin](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/WISC/wisconsin-badgers/), which owns road wins over [Michigan](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/MICH/michigan-wolverines/), [Illinois](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/ILL/illinois-fighting-illini/) and Purdue this season.\n\nHere is a breakdown of the West Region with a potential Cinderella, bracket buster and Final Four pick.\n\n## West Region bracket strategy\n\n### Cinderella to watch: No. 7 Miami\n\n[Miami](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/MIAMI/miami-fla-hurricanes/) is a team that plays better than the metrics suggest. The Canes rank top 40 in offensive and defensive efficiency, although their talent doesn't jump off the page. Head coach Jai Lucas did a great job of using the transfer portal to assemble a group that meshes well together.\n\nThe one thing Miami does exceptionally well is rebound. The Hurricanes ranked second in the ACC in offensive rebounding, behind [Duke](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/DUKE/duke-blue-devils/), and first in defensive rebounding. That's one of the key metrics I look at in the NCAA Tournament, because teams traveling and playing on neutral courts don't always shoot well early in games. Second-chance opportunities can keep a team in games, while poor rebounding teams can fall behind early and never recover.\n\nThe Canes got a tough draw facing [Missouri](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/MIZZOU/missouri-tigers/) in St. Louis. While the Tigers will certainly have the home crowd behind them, one of the things I like about the Hurricanes is they won 10 games away from home this season.\n\nIf Miami beats Missouri, it's likely Purdue and Gonzaga in the next two games. While the Canes will be underdogs against both teams, those aren't awful matchups because Miami can compete in the paint with two bigger front lines.\n\nI identified Miami a couple of months ago as a team I thought could surprise in March. The Canes have a really tough opener, but things will get interesting if Miami beats Missouri on Friday. The Cane"

Teams are presented in ascending order of odds.\n\n## Purdue Boilermakers (West No. 2 Seed)\n\n1 of 8\n\n![Purdue v UCLA](https://gsp-image-cdn.wmsports.io/cms/prod/bleacher-report/getty_images/2026-03/2266528958_large_cropped.jpg)\n\nMichael Reaves/Getty Images\n\nBraden Smith\n\n**Odds:** +2940\n\n**Reason to Buy:** Veteran Leadership and Elite Offense\n\nAfter dropping 80 points on Michigan in the Big Ten title game, Purdue is now rated by KenPom as the No. 1 offense in the nation, narrowly sliding ahead of Illinois for that crown.\n\nThat all starts with senior point guard Braden Smith, who is one assist away from Bobby Hurley for the NCAA career record. It also depends heavily upon senior shooting guard Fletcher Loyer, senior power forward Trey Kaufman-Renn, and senior center Oscar Cluff.\n\nWhen that veteran quartet is collectively doing its thing—with sophomore CJ Cox pitching in some triples, too—Purdue has the potential for greatness.\n\nThe question is whether Loyer will go through one of his cold spells from distance, or if Cluff will make minimal impact, as was the case for much of the final 13 games of the regular season.\n\nBut while Smith racked up 46 assists during the four-game Big Ten tournament run, each of those other three seniors scored in double figures in each game.\n\nThat's the blueprint for a title.\n\n**Reason to Sell**: It's Purdue\n\nArkansas-Little Rock. North Texas. Saint Peter's. Fairleigh Dickinson.\n\nNeed we say more?\n\nThe Boilermakers did finally make it to a title game two years ago, but Zach Edey isn't walking through that door.\n\nAnd though they just looked pretty great in winning the Big Ten tournament, Purdue ended the regular season with losses in seven of its final 13 games, dropping games left and right at Mackey Arena, which would have been unthinkable in recent years.\n\n**Verdict**: Selling\n\nThe offense is great, but the defense is a problem.\n\nNo one could score against them in the Big Ten tournament for some reason, but Illinois, Michigan, Ohio State, and Wisconsin all lit up this team for better than 1.3 points per possession. Even Penn State almost hit that mark in a game at Mackey Arena without its freshman star Kayden Mingo.\n\nIt's just about inevitable that they'll run into at least one game where they need to score about 90 points to overcome their poor defense. But expectations were higher for the team, which was picked to finish second in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season.\n\nA big part of those hopes fell on star freshman point guard Mikel Brown Jr., who has been incredibly effective but has missed 12 games due to a back injury.\n\nBrown sat out last week's ACC tournament and, on Wednesday, was ruled out for the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament -- including Thursday afternoon when Louisville (23-10) faces No. 11 seed [South Florida](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/SFLA/south-florida-bulls/) (25-8) in Buffalo, N.Y.\n\n\"He made great progress last week,\" Kelsey said Monday. \"We'll see how the next couple days of practice go.\"\n\nBrown, who averages 18.2 points and a team-high 4.7 assists per game, is a catalyst for the Cardinals. Louisville is 16-5 and averages 88.1 points in games he's played in and is 7-5 and averaging 81.7 in games he's missed.\n\nThe Bulls, meanwhile, have rallied from tragedy for a remarkable season. The program hired Bryan Hodgson from Arkansas State last March after previous head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim, 43, died due to complications during a medical procedure in October 2024.\n\nHodgson has led South Florida to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2012. The Bulls enter on an 11-game winning streak, with their last loss coming on Jan. 31 at Temple. Six of their last seven wins have come by at least 15 points, but Hodgson said he isn't satisfied with what he's seen.\n\n\"I think we could still play a little bit better. Put together elite performances on both sides of the ball,\" he said Monday. \"We'll need to do that on Thursday to beat Louisville.\"\n\nDivision II transfer Wes Enis is coming into his own at the Division I level entering the postseason. The bad news: Just two No. 10 seeds have reached the Sweet 16 in the past eight tournaments.\n\nThis year [Missouri](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/MIZZOU/missouri-tigers/), [Santa Clara](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/SNCLRA/santa-clara-broncos/), [Texas A&M](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/TEXAM/texas-am-aggies/) and [UCF](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/UCF/ucf-knights/) are the No. 10 seeds that will try to get past the first weekend. But they first must get past the first round.\n\n## No. 7 vs. No. 10 seed upset rankings\n\nWe'll look at the matchups between this year's No. 7 and No. 10 seeds and rank which upsets are most likely to occur. These are ordered from least likely to most likely.\n\n### 4\\. Texas A&M over Saint Mary's\n\nLike the school's football team last fall, the Texas A&M basketball team started off hot and faded down the stretch. The Aggies (21-11) began the season 17-4 overall and 7-1 in SEC play before losing seven of their last 11 and squeaking into the 68-team field.\n\nThursday's game will be a contrast of styles. A&M plays at the 29th fastest tempo in the country (70.5 possessions per 40 minutes), which is a major reason the team averages 87.7 points per game (ninth in the nation). Meanwhile, [Saint Mary's](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/MARYCA/saint-marys-gaels/) ranks 298th in tempo (65.2 possessions per 40). Despite playing at a slower tempo—or perhaps because of it—the Gaels have a more efficient offense than A&M, averaging 120.4 points per 100 possessions to the Aggies' 119.7.\n\nSaint Mary's, on paper, has a big advantage on the boards. The 12th tallest team in the country per KenPom, the Gaels rank fourth in the nation in rebounding margin (11.3 per game). By contrast, A&M is 228th in Div. I in rebound margin (-0.2). Rebounding and tempo are two reasons why Saint Mary's limits opponents to just 64.6 points per game (seventh in the country).\n\nIn addition, the Aggies are prone to fouling; they rank 325th in the nation in fouls per game (19.3). That does not bode well against the Gaels, who lead all of Div. I in free throw shooting (80.5%).\n\n### 3\\. UCF over UCLA\n\nThe Knights (21-11) are just 1-5 in five previous NCAA Tournam"
